Is my seedbox data backed up or redundant?

The Short Answer​

No. Your seedbox storage is not backed up, not redundant, and not protected by RAID. Disk failures can happen at any time, and when they do, data on that disk will be lost.

Important

Do not use your seedbox for storing important, irreplaceable, or critical data. Seedboxes are designed for temporary storage and high-performance downloading/uploading - not for long-term data preservation.

Why Don't Seedbox Providers Offer Redundant Storage?​

This is an industry-wide standard across virtually all seedbox providers, and there are very good reasons for it:

1. Cost Impact​

Redundant storage (like RAID configurations or backup systems) requires:

  • At least double the disk space - Every byte of data needs to be stored twice (or more)
  • More expensive hardware - RAID controllers, additional drives, backup systems
  • Higher operational costs - More power, cooling, maintenance

To offer redundant storage, prices would need to approximately double (or more), which the vast majority of seedbox users are not willing to pay. Seedboxes are popular precisely because they offer excellent performance at affordable prices.

2. Performance Trade-offs​

Redundant storage configurations come with performance penalties that directly conflict with seedbox requirements:

  • RAID 1 (mirroring) - Reduces write performance by ~50%
  • RAID 5/6 - Significant performance hit on writes, especially problematic for torrenting
  • RAID 10 - Better performance but requires 4x the drives, massively increasing costs
  • Real-time backups - Create I/O overhead that slows down torrent operations

Seedboxes are designed for maximum performance - particularly for handling thousands of concurrent torrent connections with high I/O operations. Adding redundancy would compromise the very purpose of a seedbox.

3. Use Case Mismatch​

Seedboxes are designed for:

  • ✅ Temporary storage of torrent data
  • ✅ High-speed downloading and uploading
  • ✅ Building ratio on private trackers
  • ✅ Streaming media (which can be re-downloaded if needed)
  • ✅ Transit storage (download to seedbox, then transfer to your own storage)

They are not designed for:

  • ❌ Long-term archival storage
  • ❌ Irreplaceable personal data (photos, documents, etc.)
  • ❌ Critical business data
  • ❌ Single-copy storage of important files

When a disk fails, all data on that disk is typically unrecoverable.

  3. Maintain your own backups of anything you can't afford to lose
  4. Treat your seedbox as temporary storage - a transit point, not a destination
  5. Keep local copies of torrent files you're seeding if you need to maintain ratio

2. Seed to build ratio (from seedbox's fast connection)
3. Download file to your local storage via FTP/SFTP
4. (Optional) Keep file on seedbox for continued seeding
5. If disk fails: Re-upload from your local backup

What Happens if a Disk Fails?​

  1. We will replace the failed disk as quickly as possible
  2. We will notify affected users of the disk failure
  3. Your account will be restored on a new disk with a fresh, empty storage space
  4. Data on the failed disk is not recoverable in most cases
  5. Service will resume once the new disk is provisioned

We do everything we can to prevent disk failures through monitoring and proactive replacement, but hardware failures are ultimately unpredictable and unavoidable.

Summary​

Your seedbox is an incredibly powerful tool for torrenting, seeding, and streaming - but it's not a backup solution. Think of it like a very fast, temporary workspace rather than a safe deposit box.

Golden Rule: If you can't afford to lose it, don't let your seedbox be the only place it exists.

Best Practice

Download your important files to your local storage within 24-48 hours of adding them to your seedbox. This way, you get all the benefits of fast seedbox performance while keeping your data safe at home.
